Finding criminal history information You may find ads, people, or websites offering to do nationwide criminal history checks for you--sometimes instantly. Are they valid? Not even a little bit. Law enforcement has access to something called the NCIC database, which has a record of felonies and serious misdemeanors, but the data is far from complete. More importantly, the private sector--including private investigators--have no legal access to this data. If someone offers it to you, they're breaking the law. What PIs and some others can access are a variety of databases with a range of sources of data. The one guarantee you have is that the data will be extremely limited. If they find nothing, that doesn't mean there's nothing there. And if they do find something, it may be far from all there is to find. In some states, such as Virginia and Maryland, criminal and civil case data is freely accessible on the Internet. However it's still not complete! And always remember, the computer record is just a small part of the story.
